2013 Event Recap

The Media & Cinema Studies program hosted two big events in May of 2013 - the 'Beyond the Margins' graduate student conference and a Dr. Who 50th anniversary colloquium.

Prof. Blair Davis organized the 'Beyond the Margins' conference, held May 17-18, with nearly forty students from across the country presenting papers about the relationships between mainstream and marginalized media texts. Keynote speaker Dr. Dana Polan of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University gave a talk entitled "The Square Screen: The 'Tammy Show' and Unhip Cinema of the 1960s." The conference was sponsored by DePaul University's Vincentian Endowment Fund.

Prof. Paul Booth organized the Dr. Who colloquium "A Celebration of Dr. Who," held May 4th, which saw numerous scholarly roundtables discussing the show's critical, moral and ethical dilemmas. Keynote speaker Robert Shearman, a writer for the show and Hugo award nominee, discussed his episode "Dalek" and participated in a Q&A session about his work.
